In southern France, in a quiet little town, the mayor, who also owns a castle with some cattle, is in the wine cellar with some other people: the pharmacist, the veterinary, and some of his employees. As they are drinking wine, they hear a terrible noise and the heat's getting higher and higher. They don't realize what's happening: when they come out of the cellar, they realize that everything has burned, and all the buildings are destroyed...

Le poissonnier Louis Dujardin (Francis Blanche) inaugure son nouveau magasin. Il fait la connaissance du romancier de série noire César Brandini (Darry Cowl) et de deux faux banquiers suisses mais véritables escrocs), Henri (Michel Serrault) et André (Jean Poiret), qui cherchent un retable d'une valeur inestimable. Dujardin, en difficulté financière, espère un secours des "banquiers". Le retable convoité par d'autres brigands passe de main en main... et après une folle poursuite impliquant presque tous les protagonistes de l'action, le retable sera récupéré par celui que l'on attendait plus : l'entrepreneur des travaux de rénovation de la "fermette" de Dujardin, qui "n'aime pas les mauvais payeurs"

La comtesse et son fils, le vicomte Louis, un doux irresponsable, sont propriétaires du château de Montverdier, qui tombe en ruines. Fernand Castanier, lui, est le boulanger de Mussy-sur-Ploute, la bourgade voisine. Il vient de gagner 50 millions de francs au loto et rêve, grâce à cette somme, de doter le village d'une équipe de football de haut niveau. Mais M. Luc, son voisin, a d'autres idées en tête pour utiliser le pactole. Franche crapule, celui-ci doit une importante somme d'argent à la mafia. Pour rembourser ses dettes, il a réussi à convaincre la comtesse et le vicomte de transformer le château, dont il est le régisseur, en une luxueuse résidence hôtelière.
